Jules of Morocco

elloPortland's Business of the Week

Jules of Morocco

Fashion of Two Worlds

Jules of Morocco has been designing women’s clothing since 1983, using Morocco’s finest traditional hand-woven all-natural fabric. Their designs lend themselves beautifully to the natural drape of the fabric, complimenting every figure.

Jules of Morocco was founded when Julie Olson moved to Morocco and discovered the exquisite traditional hand woven fabric that is found only in Morocco. She began designing clothes inspired by the unique draping qualities of this supple fabric. The local expatriot community of Rabat started buying her designs at such a rate that Julie knew she had to find a larger factory to work with; it was in 1985 that she started working with her factory in Marrakech.

She now has a retail shop in the historic and charming Multnomah Village as well as a thriving online business.

Chocolates by Bernard Callebaut

ElloPortland’s Business of the Week

Chocolates by Bernard Callebaut

Meet "Chocolates by Bernard Callebaut" of Lake Oswego, Oregon, Grand Prize winner at the 1998 International Festival of Chocolate in Roanne, France. Bernard Callebaut continues to produce the finest quality chocolates in the Belgian tradition. They have the world's most mouth watering, deliciously healthy chocolates and exquisite gift items available for both individual and corporate orders. Each chocolate has an average of 50 calories per piece, with organic ingredients and 0 Trans fat. They were even kind enough to give you all a recipe for truffles that you can make at home.

Easter Chocolate Truffles

makes 14 generous sized hot cross bun truffles
45g (@3T) unsalted butter, chopped coarsely
250g (@ 2.5 cups) wonderful dark chocolate from Bernard Callebaut, chopped coarsely
1/2 cups (80ml) thickened cream
1 t. glucose
1 t. ground cinnamon
1 t. ground mixed spice
1/4 cup saltanas, finely chopped
200g (@1c) wonderful Dark Chocolate from Bernard Callebaut, melted for dipping
100g (@1/2 c) Bernard Callebauts White Gourmet White Chocolate, melted for the crosses.

How to put it all together.

1. Place the butter and your gourmet Chocolate by Bernard Callebaut in a medium sized microwave safe bowl.

2. Microwave on medium power for 1 minutes. Stir then continue to microwave on medium power at 30 sec. intervals. Continue until chocolate has just melted. This should not take more than 2 minutes.

3. Add the cream and the glucose. Mix through until combined and smooth. Stir through the spices and sultanas.

4. Cover and chill until thick enough to roll easily into a ball.

5. The easiest way to make the bun shapes would be to use a small ice cream scoop.

Place the Easter bun shapes on a baking tray lined with non-stick baking paper. (An ice cream scoop that holds about 1t. of water works well). Chill the balls until quite firm.

6. Dip the Easter buns into your melted Gourmet Dark Chocolate from Bernard Callebaut, shake off the excess and leave to drip on a wire rack.

7. Take the truffles off the wire rack just before the Chocolate sets and place them on a clean sheet of non-stick baking paper.

8. Pipe a cross with your White Gourmet Chocolate from Bernard Callebaut over the top of each chocolate truffle.

Leave to set.

9. The truffles are now finished. Cover and store in the refrigerator.

These Easter chocolate treats can be made a week in advance as long as you keep them chilled.

Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East

ElloPortland’s Business of the Week:

I struggled with the words to describe all that Habitat for Humanity does for the community and in the end I decided that they say it best. After reading this I have no doubt you will understand why they are elloPortland’s Business of the Week.

Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East

Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East serves Multnomah County and northern Clackamas County and has the ability to reach out to families one step away from homelessness. Habitat sells homes to hardworking people in need of decent, affordable housing. We are an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a non-denominational Christian housing ministry and global home-building movement. We welcome people from all walks of life to partner with our program to serve families in need with generosity, humility and love.

Habitat offers homeownership opportunities to families making $20,000-$40,000 a year by selling homes at cost, making no profit, after the family contributes 500 sweat equity hours. Houses are sold below market value because of volunteer labor and donations. Families pay a 1% down payment on a 0% interest mortgage. Instead of being in a vulnerable and fragile economic position, Habitat families find themselves in a position of strength.

As the oldest Habitat for Humanity affiliate on the West Coast, and the largest in Oregon, Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East has served low-income, hardworking families for over 25 years and has served over 190 families. Our homeowners are committed and successful. We have experienced less than a 1% default rate on our mortgages, lower than the national average. By providing a hand up, not a handout, our program maintains the dignity and pride of our homeowner families.

Our Vision

A community where everyone has a simple, decent, affordable place to live; and where poverty housing is unacceptable.

Our Mission

To create successful homeownership by partnering hardworking families in need with the community to build healthy, affordable homes.

Our Values

• Diversity and Inclusiveness – We believe that all people deserve a simple, decent place to live, and have something to contribute in building homes and helping our communities. We welcome people from all walks of life to partner with our program.

• Homeownership – We believe in the power of homeownership to affirm dignity, encourage hope, and transform lives. A healthy, stable home improves the quality of life, both for the family and the community.

• Families as Partners – We believe that dignity is promoted not simply by living in an adequate house, but by fully contributing to the process of building and buying that home and helping others acquire adequate shelter.

• Volunteerism – We believe in the volunteer spirit and are committed to offering rewarding volunteer experiences.

• Stewardship – We are committed to excellence, to efficient use of our financial, environmental, and human resources and we are accountable to our funders, volunteers, and family partners.

• Collaboration – We strive to create strong, productive partnerships with organizations and area housing providers toward our common goal of eliminating substandard housing.

Please visit their site and show your support.

Candy Ultra Lounge

elloPortland's Biz of the Week

“eating comfort food and desserts off of one of those TV trays while watching your favorite show on the big, wood panel-sided TV.” That’s the feel that the owner of Candy Ultra Lounge was going for. I would say they accomplished that with a modern twist. Candy boasts a touch screen monitor at every table and a menu full of comfort food, including milkshakes served either virgin or spiked. Yum!!!

With offerings such as Happy Hour, dancing and live music, depending on the night, they should be able to accommodate every whim. And with a décor consisting of caramel curtains, candy apple red mirrors and chocolate walls, you feel like you just walked into a giant candy apple. What could be more comforting? Treat yourself to a night out at:

Cupcake Jones

ElloPortland’s Business of the Week:

I work at a restaurant downtown and last week the staff of  Cupcake Jones came in for dinner. They were kind enough to bring our staff two boxes of the most heavenly cupcakes I have ever tasted. After my first bite of the  'Downtown Cupcake Brown' I  decided that Cupcake Jones had to be elloPortland's Business of the week. Do your part to make the world a happier place; eat a cupcake.

I'm willing to bet you'll be able to find something there to tempt you.

The Pearl” is white velvet cake filled with vanilla bean pastry cream, topped with vanilla bean buttercream icing and a white chocolate pearl.

Velvet Painting” is red velvet cake filled with vanilla bean pastry cream topped with cream cheese icing, and a hand candied rose petal.

Downtown Cupcake Brown” is delicious devil’s food cake filled with sour cream chocolate ganache topped with fresh grated dark chocolate.
